Crispy Spicy Chakali - Taste as good as Bhajani Chakali

Chakali is most essential snack in Diwali festival. It goes very well with hot cuppa Tea and nothing beat if its home made. Yes it has "wow" factor.

Thanks mom for this wonderful recipe and it taste just like bhajani chakali. Crispy, crunchy savory.. mouthwatering. hmm.. You cant stop eating if u take just one bite.
Beware !!! You will not control your taste buds :-P
This one is made up from whole wheat flour, chickpeas flour and moong dal. Its quite easy so dont worry and must give it a try. Happy Diwali!!!

Time: Preparation time : 20 minutes + Cooking time : 40 minutes
Serves : 10-15 people(around 40 good size chakali)

Ingredients:
3 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup chickpeas flour
1 cup moong dal
2-3 tbsp red chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tbsp roasted cumin powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp asofoetida
1 tsp carom seeds or ajwain
2 tbsp sesame seeds
2 tbsp oil
salt to taste

Method:

1. Take whole wheat flour in one pressure cooker container.

2. In another pressure cooker container add moong dal. Rinse well with water. Add about 2 cups of water.

3. Put moong dal container over whole wheat flour container. Presser cook around 2 whistles. Idea behind is, moong dal should get fully cooked and whole wheat flour gets steamed.(see note)

4. Strain whole wheat flour and chickpeas flour with strainer. Break any loose lumps.

5. Take boiled moong dal, to that add 2-3 tbsp water and mash well. In same strainer strain well mashed moong dal(or use blender to make into smooth paste). Similarly break any loose lumps.

6. In big container, add whole wheat flour and all dry spices. Mix well. Heat 2 tbsp oil in small pot. Add it to whole wheat flour mixture. Mix well. This gives crispiness to chakali.

7.  Add moong dal paste about 1/2 cup at a time. Knead dough to medium stiff consistency. Keep aside for 1/2 to 1 hr.

8. Take small portion from dough. Wet your hand with little water and knead again to make it smooth. Do not add more water otherwise chakali will not be crispy.

9. Put dough ball in chakali mold/maker(will get this at Indian grocery store) and start to make chakali on paper.(see note)

10. Heat oil on medium heat. Deep fry chakali until golden brown.

Note:

1. If you have small cooker then first cook moong dal and then steam whole wheat flour without putting whistle on for 10 minutes.
2. Alternatively Icing or piping bags with star nozzle can be used to make chakali.
